Ingredients Needed for the Steamed Tofu and Shrimp Recipe
Apart from the three main ingredients, tofu, shrimp, and egg, this dish requires a few seasonings and sauces. I listed the ingredients below so that you can organize them easily.
Main Ingredients for the Recipe
- Tofu: Take 1 lb of packaged tofu. These usually come in large blocks and you need to cut them into your preferred size. If you want to use homemade tofu, go for it.
- Shrimp: 10-12 large shrimps are good enough. The shrimp should be peeled and deveined. I prefer to keep the tail on. You can raise or lower the number of shrimp based on the preference of eaters.
- Egg: Use 3 whole eggs.
- Broccoli: A small to medium broccoli, cut into florets larger than tofu cubes.
- Ginger: 1 tbsp of ginger, finely chopped
- Scallion: 2 tbsp of scallions, thinly sliced
- Sesame Oil: 2-3 tbsp
Seasonings and Sauces for the Recipe
- Salt: 1 tsp
- Soy Sauce: 2 tbsp, light soy sauce
See how small the ingredients list is! The steps for cooking the dish are also easy. Let’s move on to that.
Steamed Tofu and Shrimp Recipe: Step-By-Step Instructions
Preparing the shrimp beforehand will help you make this recipe faster. In this recipe, I am doing that. Check the detailed steps and make sure you follow along.
Step 1: Clean the Shrimp
First, give the shrimp a basic wash. Then, carefully peel and devein the shrimp. Keeping the tail on gives the shrimp some volume, and they turn out delicious. But if you don’t like the tail, you can peel it off.
Step 2: Marinate the Shrimp
Take the cleaned shrimp in a small bowl and add 1/4 tsp of salt to the shrimp. Put about 1/2 tbsp of soy sauce in the bowl and coat the shrimp well.
You can keep the marinated shrimp in the refrigerator for a few hours if you have time. Otherwise, set it aside for a few minutes until we prepare the tofu and the broccoli.
Step 3: Cut the Tofu
Take large tofu blocks and cut them into large cubes evenly. Each tofu cube should be at least 2 inches. Some people prefer to use cylindrical tofu blocks and cut them into discs. But I prefer the cubes.
Step 4: Clean and Cut the Broccoli
Wash the broccoli well so that there is no dirt. When washing the broccoli, turn it upside down to clean it better. Then, cut the floret carefully. The size of the broccoli florets should be similar to the tofu chunks, or even a bit larger.
Step 5: Beat the Egg
Crack three eggs in a bowl. Add one large pinch of salt to the eggs and beat them well with chopsticks. After beating the eggs for some time, add warm water to the eggs.
The volume of the warm water should be 1.5 times the volume of the eggs. This will make the eggs smoother and more tender. Beat the eggs for a few more minutes. Finally, skim the foam off.
Step 6: Organize the Ingredients for Steaming
Take a large bowl and spread the tofu cubes evenly in it. Pour the beaten eggs into the bowl. The beaten egg will almost cover the tofu. Then, place the broccoli florets onto the tofu layer so that they stay upright.
Also, decorate the center with the marinated shrimp in a circular pattern. You can try any other pattern to your liking.
Step 7: Steam the Dish
In a steaming pot, let the water come to a boil. Place the bowl of tofu, broccoli, shrimp, and egg, onto the steamer. Then, close the lid and let the tofu steam for about 10 minutes.
After 10 minutes, take the dish off the heat and let it sit for about two minutes.
Step 8: Season, Garnish, and Serve
As you might have noticed, I haven’t used the oil yet. This will be used to season and garnish the dish. In a small pan, heat the sesame oil along with the chopped ginger. You don’t have to fry the ginger completely.
Once the oil is hot, drizzle the ginger-infused oil over the tofu. Then, pour the remaining soy sauce and sprinkle some scallions on top. The delicious and creamy steamed tofu with shrimp is ready to dig in.
